Not every makeup application has to be all about the smokey eye, and not every ‘editorial makeup look’ means a lot of makeup.
This model was getting photos done that would work in her portfolio focused towards the Asian market for editorial jobs. What we did was a heavy contour on the cheek bones and nose and light foundation. Instead of using a lot of makeup the placement of the product was the key. Lightly contour a neutral matte shadow in the eye crease to give it depth and warmth but not color.
We used very minimal eye liner on the bottom just a gray shadow and mascara to open the eyes and
define them, but not show up like eye liner in the photo. The top eye liner was the focus of this makeup application, it had to be pristine, clean and even. Making sure both eyes are perfectly symmetrical is where you spend your time on a makeup look like this.
The final attention was paid to the cheek bones and applying blush very lightly at the apples by patting it on and then pulling it lightly towards the temples.
The most difficult thing about natural makeup applications is the patience it takes to work on each feature and blend and blend and layer and layer lightly each time. No single feature or application can be done quickly or with too much product at the beginning or you will never get it to look fresh and light.
Then lastly…you need a fabulous model and a fabulous photographer to complete the picture!

First attempt at my new favorite hair style…I call it ‘Top Nest’. I plan to wear this to all major events…because it is super easy and makes me look taller, and I don’t have to wash it!!!
Step 1…Pull hair into very high tight pony tail
Step 2… Tease hair within an inch of its life…make it look like a big mess of cotton candy
Step 3… Wrap the end of the hair loosely around the mess of ‘cotton candy’ just one time
Step 4… Pin a few pieces down to the base of the pony tail to keep it in place and give it some dimension (use U shaped bobby pins instead of traditional)
Step 5…Lightly rub your temples with your fingers so the hair isn’t too perfectly pulled back
Step 6… Spray with some light shine spray and then some light hair spray
The best part of this look is it will look different every- time and you can use the bobby pins to change the shape or style. Next attempt will be this version but low to the side with a messy side swipe bangs.
I seem to buy all these products and beauty tools and I use them regularly for the first month or so and then I forget about them and they just sit there in my drawers and on my counter. This year my plan is to actually use the products I have. I actually like the way I feel when I use them, and I like the routine…so here is my list.
If I don’t end up liking a product or tool I promise to get rid of it so that I don’t end up with messy over flowing drawers in my bathroom.
1.) Wash my makeup brushes every Sunday
2.) Take Biotin everyday to help my hair and lashes and nails grow and stay healthy
3.) Learn more fun easy ways to wear my hair up – a very messy nest is gonna be awesome for dirty hair
4.) Use my teeth whitener (Glo) system twice a year
5.) Master the ‘light eye shadow and bright lip stick’ makeup look on myself
6.) Use a mud mask once a week and try Glam Glow that everyone has been talking about
7.) Try more fun nail polish styles – less is more…trending with strips of missing nail polish
Color matching foundation for your skin can be tricky and it can seem to change in different lights and mirrors. It can also go terribly wrong in photos even some celebrities have trouble with getting the right color to show up in red carpet photos.
I have made all of these mistakes and many more! In this post I will give you some tips and tricks to use and a few techniques that might add a few minutes to your makeup routine, but you will end up looking ‘flawless’ in any light or mirror or photo!
1.) No one is one color foundation. This is not a ploy to get you to buy more product, in fact your product will last longer if done right…but you really do need at least two colors maybe a third depending on how much your color changes by the season.
2.) Match your all over foundation color to your decollate. This is the color that should be used on most of your face especially around the nose and chin.
3.) Use the color of your neck as your highlighter color. This should be placed below the eye, along the jaw line, down the center of the nose and in-between the eye brows faded up towards the forehead.
4.) The color on the top of your shoulders or arms is usually a great color to match your bronzy color. This should be applied around the hairline and forehead, then around the cheeks or slightly below depending on your face shape.
I always apply with a brush, because a sponge will use up my product and my fingers can spread bacteria and oils. After I have applied the coverage I want I go back over everything with a brush that has No product on it just for extra blending and to remove all the excess product off your face.
Last little tip is to never try to buy a color of foundation for a different season…example “In the summer time I am super tan, so I should buy a color that is a little darker.” This almost never works out to be the correct color, buy the foundation when you are Actually tan and vice versa.
“I am as much of an obsessive sunless tanner as there is, however…even I start to go a bit lighter in the winter time”. – Sequoia Leopold
The whole idea behind a good flawless spray tan is so that it isn’t totally noticeable. What is more noticeable than looking crazy dark in the wintertime in the Northwest.
This is what I recommend…I suggest going in for a professional spray tan 1-2 times per month and then keeping it up at home.
What you will need to do at home…find a spray and a lotion that you love and combine the two. The spray will help with getting the areas where the lotion misses and add a little extra color, because sprays have a slightly higher level of DHA. The lotion will help keep the tan going longer and will hydrate your skin as you apply it. They are ideal for the legs and arms and décolleté. The stomach, back, hands, feet, and face are better bronzed with the spray.
When bronzing the hands and feet, it is highly recommended to use the same process that we do at the studio. Protect your nails with Vaseline or lotion, then wipe down your palms and bottoms of your feet…then lastly add a little dab of hand lotion to even it out and make sure it blends proper.
You will want to use the spray at night, drying yourself a bit before getting dressed with either a fan or a hairdryer. Then put on loose fitting clothes in a darker color, because the spray does still have a touch of bronzer color in it that can transfer to your clothes until you shower.
Use the lotion during the day to enhance tan and hydrate your skin. The lotion is almost completely clear, but I would still think twice about wearing white immediately after applying the lotion.
One more tip that only applies in the winter, you might want to put on a light layer of body moisturizer a few hours before coming in for your sunless airbrush tan. Your skin tends to be quit dry in the winter especially around your elbows knees and feet…and a little lotion can help. We also highly recommend the PH Balance Prep Spray prior to your sunless tan. This will ensure that you skin is even and smooth and the tan will go on much more naturally.
There are many times when a full face of flawlessly applied makeup is the appropriate look, and then there are times when the imperfections of your skin should show thru just a little or it looks unnatural. Airbrush foundation is a fabulous tool to have available for long lasting makeup, but it is not right for every occasion.
The red carpet or event photos…this is when your foundation should be full coverage with contouring and matte finish using a powder or setting spray. It is imperative to use a primer for this look and to let the primer sit on the face and settle before applying the rest of your makeup.
Then there is the occasion of going to a pool party, coffee with friends, or a casual BBQ when looking over done and fancy is not the right look
A trick to applying perfect foundation when you only want to even out your skin tone ad look polished not ‘done up’
One of my ‘Go-to’ foundation choices is Conceal and Reveal by Rain Cosmetics because it is heavier than tinted moisturizer, but not a heavy feeling foundation…and it has SPF in it, so it is great for an everyday look. Not great for photos, ladies!
Just use a touch of foundation where its needed, bronzing on the cheeks and forehead, and mascara are your basics. The best look for the upcoming Fourth of July Celebration is a matte red lip accented by bronzed powder and light rose gold shimmer eye shadow…(reminder that when using a shimmer eye shadow, do not apply above the crease). Keep it fresh and simple.
A messy pony tail either half way up in the back of the head or low and to the side. The best part is to wrap a small piece of hair around the pony tail base not only to cover up the hairband, but also to add a little volume and structure to the hair style. The larger piece of hair you wrap around, the more the pony tail will stand up on the back of your head. Very fresh and youthful.
I love dressing up or for a specific occasion, but costumes are only meant for Halloween or a Costume Party. Make your 4th of July outfit stylish and patriotic without looking like you belong in the Independence Day Parade. I also think it is smart to have pieces of clothing that you can wear again for any occasion, so a blue and white stripped dress or top is a fabulous idea…then add a little pop of red somewhere with shoes or accessories. Also a reminder that you want to be comfortable so you can sit at a BBQ or walk for a long distance to the fireworks or park. Wedges, Converse style, cowboy boots, or sandals are the only appropriate form of footwear for this holiday, heels in general are way too formal and actual athletic shoes are way too casual.
Bring a big canvas tote with you wherever you go. You will be the hero when you have a place to put everyone else’s keys, extra sweatshirts, and water bottles! Found this one by WildFox at Via Lago for $150, but it is reversible so its half the price right?
“Enjoy the holiday responsibly, please! There are others in the park, watching the fireworks, and on their boats who might not want to deal with drunken disasters…and none of us want to meet you on the road. Act like you care about our country and the people who live in it for the day”
I think you should apply lip conditioner once for every 3 times you apply lipstick or lip gloss. This will keep your lips from that flaky dry look (totally unattractive and distracting when you are talking to people).
Its all about hydration! Picking the right product that doesn’t contain ingredients that will make the problem worse is key. Read labels and pay attention.
Messy Top Knot – perfect for very dirty or already messy hair
My big black sunglasses don’t get out many months in Seattle, but when we do finally see the sun they are everywhere. I love the Tom Ford gold rim glasses in the Infinity Shape. However…they are just not in my budget at this time, so I found a pair at Fred Meyer that I rock. I wear them with everything and the best part is that the nose bridge is solid plastic and doesn’t get caught in my hair when I have them on top of my head!
Gold Bar Necklaces are super trendy right now, but I think they are here to stay.
It is a fabulous piece to layer and in the summer time when you don’t want big heavy chunky jewelry on it is a perfect accessory. Once again, this piece goes with everything and always shows, because I LOVE a good V-Neck.
TNA Long Sleeve Tee-shirt is a great example of my obsession with V-Necks. It is bit oversized which I love, it is soft and light weight so it can be worn year round. It also is affordable at just $35. When you wear something 2-3 times a week, that turns out to be an incredible deal! Available at Aritzia.
I use my blender almost everyday to make fruit smoothies. For me, I don’t like making green smoothies so I just use fruit, but it does make green smoothies with veggies as well. It only takes a few minutes to chop up the fruit and a minute to blend and I just rinse off the blades and take the cup to work.
“When I find something I love, I tend to buy a few of them. I have learned my lesson and now when I find a product or an item that works, I don’t feel guilty about buying them in sets of 3. I don’t do this with colors or trends, but it works wonders for basics.”

Her products are completely clean and free of Bismuth, a common mineral used as a filler in most makeup lines and it can cause the unnatural white shiny look you see in photos. The product line is also very simple to use with only 3 steps in the skin care routine and just a simple foundation, blush and concealer in the makeup line. The 5 minute face! Bright lipstick makes your teeth look whiter and your smile will show up so nicely in all the photos all night.
Laqa & Co. Lip Crayon ($12) with Bombshell Lip Gloss ($8)
The lip crayon will stay on all night, while the lip gloss will give it a soft shine so it doesn’t ever look worn or dry.
Teasing your hair so it looks sexy and full not like a Texas Beauty Queen (no offense Texas). There are several different techniques to giving the hair volume without frizz or flyaways…just a little messy and natural. Always make sure the rats nest is hidden.
I had no idea she had a shoe line (of course who doesn’t), but it was reasonable ($98) and they are comfortable. They go with everything and they can look sophisticated or rocker sexy depending on the outfit and accessories. The perfect go-to heel for a stylish night out.
I have been using Flywheel more these days instead of Uber. It is much less expensive and still has the ease of an app on your phone and no need to have cash on hand your card is automatically charged (tip included).
“Never under any circumstances after the age of 23 are you ever allowed to take your heels off during or after an event. You must wait until you are in your form of transportation! No exceptions.”
I have been getting my lashes done by Wink Lash Extensions for almost 2 years now, and I have not had a problem with my natural lashes at all. All of the technicians there are educated and detailed with each service. I make my appointments last minute so I see someone different every-time, but the service and outcome is consistent! www.winklashextensions.com
